“Labor is a healthy, natural process:” The BirthCenter at Olmsted Medical Center

Olmsted Medical Center’s BirthCenter

Understanding that labor is a healthy, natural process, Olmsted Medical Center (OMC) encourages families to become active participants in the entire birth experience. Offering family-centered care from early pregnancy through baby’s arrival, our BirthCenter’s caregivers work hard to provide the best possible birthing experience for you in a warm and inviting facility.

OMC knows your birth experience is one of the most important events in your life. Most likely, you are experiencing strong emotions, dreams, and uncertainty in anticipation of your child’s birth. Their staff will walk with you on your journey, providing exceptional medical care, support, and understanding.

Whenever possible, OMC respects their patients’ definitions of “family” where visitation is concerned and are open to visitors from 1:00–9:00 PM each day. This ensures that you have the support you need from family members.

Labor, Delivery, Recovery, & Postpartum (LDRP) Care

Single room maternity care

Single-room maternity care, also known as Labor, Deliver, Recovery and Postpartum (LDRP) care, is standard at the BirthCenter. Unless in need of emergency care, expectant moms never change rooms. Each of their private rooms is warmly decorated and provides a comfortable environment.

We offer new mothers and their partners a complimentary special meal the night before they leave the hospital.

One-to-One Care

OMC provides mother-baby nursing care. The same nurse who cares for mom will care for baby. This increases the consistency of care and provides comfort for new parents.

Rooming In

OMC practices “rooming-in” aftercare where the baby stays in the room with his/her new parent(s) as much as possible. The time immediately after birth is a valuable opportunity for babies and families—babies thrive on the nurturing qualities of familiar voices and touch, and family members gain precious moments to bond with their new arrival.

OMC provides “on demand” room service. Patients may call and request their choice of meals delivered to their room at a time that works best for them. Menus are coordinated by registered dietitians and prepared fresh by OMC’s food service staff. Special dietary requests are accommodated, including food intolerances, food allergies, and cultural/religious preferences.

Midwifery

Midwife means “with woman.” Certified Nurse Midwives (CNMs) provide general women’s health care throughout a woman’s life.

Olmsted Medical Center’s Certified Nurse Midwives

At Olmsted Medical Center, their CNMs believe you need time and special attention so you can be healthy. Women can see a CNM for:

  • yearly check-ups
  • health counseling
  • care for common infections that happen to women
  • birth control and family planning
  • care and support during pregnancy and birth
  • care after birth

Lactation Services

OMC’s lactation services offer comprehensive inpatient and outpatient breastfeeding support to parents and infants.

A team of international board-certified lactation consultants provides personalized assistance to mothers. OMC’s lactation specialists and nurses have a more than an 80% breastfeeding initiation rate at OMC’s hospital.

To be clear, they will not pressure you to breastfeed your child. The OMC team believes the method of feeding is a personal choice each mother makes, depending on her unique situation. And they don’t believe in an “all or nothing” approach—their lactation team can help you find a combination of breast-and bottle-feeding that works for you and your baby.

Low Complication and Cesarean Birth Rates

The BirthCenter’s primary cesarean birth rate meets World Health Organization (WHO) recommendations that cesarean birth rates should not be higher than 10% to 15%. When complications arise, the BirthCenter is well equipped for any emergency. Anesthesiologists are available at all times, and their pediatric team is available to respond to you and your baby’s needs 24 hours a day.

Pain Management

There are many comfort methods available that allow women to make a choice for their labor and delivery. Informing you about the comfort measures available at the OMC BirthCenter is their main goal. Each woman has a different degree of pain. As a result, they offer a number of different options for pain management.

Some options include:

  • nitrous oxide
  • non-pharmaceutical pain management
  • comfort measures including:
    • massage
    • rhythmic breathing
    • aromatherapy (use of essential oils)
    • hip squeeze and counter pressure
    • hydrotherapy (use of water in a tub or shower)
    • music
    • birthing ball
  • pharmaceutical management
  • TENS unit (Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation)
  • anesthesia
  • general anesthesia

OMC encourages you to weigh the pros and cons of each method and talk with your healthcare provider at your next prenatal visit.

Prenatal Education and Breastfeeding Support

OMC provides prenatal and breastfeeding education and support in classroom and one-to-one settings. This includes up-to-date materials, resources, and a variety of programs that support expectant parents from early pregnancy through labor, postpartum, breastfeeding, and early parenting.
