6 LGBTQ Read-Alouds to Celebrate Pride, Love, and Acceptance

We are pleased to have Heather Acerro, Head of Youth Services at the Rochester Public Library, providing us the scoop on all things library! There are so many fun things happening at our library this summer. She will be regularly contributing to Rochester MN Moms Blog on behalf of the Rochester Public Library.


With the recent tragedy targeting the LGBTQ community in Orlando and local Pride celebrations under way it is an important time to have conversations with your kids about having love and acceptance for all people. These six titles are great conversation starters for even the youngest listeners and readers.   • Red: A Crayon’s Story by Michael Hall //  This heart-warming story abut a crayon embracing his inner self will delight all readers and you can meet the author at RPL on

  • Families by Shelly Rotner // Filled with full-color photographs celebrating the uniqueness of each family, this book is fun to read and admire.
  • Morris Micklewhite and the Tangerine Dress by Christine Baldacchino // Thismorris micklewhite award-winning picture book celebrates the courage it takes to be different.
  • Stella Brings the Family by Miriam Schiffer  // This lovely title follows Stella as she brings her two fathers to school to celebrate Mother’s Day.
