Kitchen Crafts: DIY Flour Paint and Veggie Stamps for Kids

I’m always on the hunt for fun activities to do with the kids on those lazy days at home. In fact, I have a Pinterest board loaded with ideas just for this purpose. Recently, I pulled out two activities that I’ve been meaning to try and fused them together to create one epic afternoon of crafting. We made our own three-ingredient edible paints and then used the paints with handmade vegetable stamps to create unique artwork. I enjoyed this craft because the paints are safe for all ages and the vegetable stamps were made with things we already had on hand in our kitchen. Easy peasy!

There are several different edible paint recipes online. I sorted through a bunch and created my own concoction. For my DIY flour paint recipe you’ll need:

  1. flour
  2. food coloring
  3. water
  4. bowls & spoons

Directions:

In a medium sized bowl, mix 3/4 cup flour, 1/2 cup water and 2-3 drops of food coloring. Mix until smooth. You may adjust the flour or water amount to the consistency you prefer.

My kids really enjoyed helping stir the flour mixture and adding the food coloring. We even mixed a couple different colors to create new ones. Once your paint is mixed you could use it for fun finger painting projects or with paint brushes. We decided to make our own vegetable stamps to see if they would work with our DIY paints.

For the DIY vegetable stamps you’ll need:

  1. assorted vegetables and/or fruits (we used potatoes, celery, carrots and apples)
  2. kitchen knife & cutting board
  3. paint
  4. paper

Directions:

An adult can help cut and carve designs into the potatoes and carrots. We tried a few different techniques. If you have small cookie cutters you can push the cutter into a halved potato and cut off the excess with a small knife, leaving a imprint of the cookie cutter design behind. If you’re feeling adventurous you can cut your own custom designs into the veggies. Get creative!

Once you have your veggies cut you can dip them in your paint and start stamping away on your paper. We tried construction paper, printer paper and packaging paper. The paint had a really fun “puffy” effect.

After we tested out our flour paint we wiped off our stamps and tried acrylic paint too. You can buy small inexpensive bottles at any craft store.
