When NOT to DIY!

As a crafty, creative type, I LOVE to take on home improvement projects. I’ve done endless demo, plaster chipping, and wallpaper removal, and I’ve also taken on everything from paint to crown moulding, installing tile, even making light fixtures. We see all the great shows on TV where a “little” money and just a weekend can give a room a whole new look. And while these may give us just the inspiration we all need to live better in the space we have, there is a limit to what we should take on without a professional. As an architect, I often receive frazzled calls and emails from homeowners who are in too deep. But how far is too far as a do-it-yourself-er? I have three rules I follow as a homeowner that I wanted to share from the perspective of a professional.

Questions to ask before you decide to DIY:

Is it legal?

Several things seem simple enough at first glance but many actually require a building permit or licensed professional. This is important for any future issues, and especially important if/when you go to sell your home, as prospective buyers will want proof that the work was done correctly and per code. Besides the obvious construction of a new home, you also need a permit inside the city of Rochester for solar installations, masonry work, plumbing and electrical, egress window repair/ replacement, and even building a deck. It’s best to check with the building safety department and be sure you’re complying with building code. Additionally, removal of structural walls for that ever popular “open concept” many require reconfiguring the support and framing in your home. If you’re not sure, get a second opinion from a contractor, architect, or structural engineer.

Will it work?

Design is a subjective thing and very personal. Your home should work for you and those you share it with. Are you trying to talk your partner into something you saw on Pinterest? Is it something that truly works for your family? We are all on a budget; some are just larger than others. However, it’s worthwhile to get feedback on your ideas before implementing a big change. Many architects and designers are willing to consult on a project for a minimal fee, and it may give you peace of mind about your design direction, or even open up new possibilities. There are many ways to find a good designer or architect, who can refer you other professionals if needed.

Am I actually saving money?

There are times to experiment and times to get it right the first time. If you’re an experienced painter and it’s something you enjoy, this is a perfect DIY project for you. Does your spouse have a knack for trimwork and fine finishing? Great! However, tiling a shower as a first time project only to end up ripping it out and calling a professional will not only cost money and potentially cause other damage to your home, it can really up the stress when the cost triples.

Enjoying the space you live in can be incredibly empowering, relaxing, or inspiring. But don’t let a runaway project destroy the end goal. Have fun, take your time, and of course, post pictures.  😉
