A Sick Parent’s Guide to Coping with Kids

A Sick Parent's Guide to Coping with Kids | Rochester MN Moms Blog

(My son…miserable…on the couch…covered in vomit)

Sick kiddos is one thing but being a sick parent is quite another story.  Nothing like feeling horrible and still having to care for little people.  Parents don’t get sick days.  Somehow, even when we are feeling at our worst, we muster up the strength to pack lunches, wipe butts, change diapers…

It is amazing how much parents can do in spite of the nauseous feeling that has sent us running to the toilet for the 3rd time today.

Here is a little self-care list to help you get through your “sick day”….

1. Before you get sick put together a “parent sick bag.” In the bag have crackers, ginger ale or 7-up, teas, medication, Kleenex, essential oils, can of chicken soup…anything that helps you feel when you don’t feel well. Then, when sickness strikes you are prepared and don’t have to suffer through the day without your essentials.

2. Before the other adult in your house leaves for the day, take a shower or a bath.

3. While you are showering or bathing tell your partner to “arm the bedroom” with everything you need….

Pack and play
Juice boxes, bottles, or sippy cups
Crackers
Snacks
Computer
TV
Books
Toys
Swing
Baby bouncer
Pacifiers
Blanket
Phone
Timer
Chargers for all electronic devices

4. Politely request your partner check in on you during the afternoon and bring you a hot drink.

5. Sleep when the kids sleep. Even if your child does not nap, tell them they have to be quiet in their bed for 60 mins. If it works for you set a timer, so they know when they can get out of their bed.

6. Call your mom, a friend, or babysitter, to come over and watch the kids for a few hours. Remember asking for help is a sign of strength! Using a little of your strength to dial up some help will allow you to use your remaining strength to get well.

7.  It is good to call for pizza delivery. Reserve your dinner stress for fighting those cold bugs!

To better health!
