I Brought My Baby to Work – And It Worked!

“What kind of work do you do?” “Until how old?” “How did you get anything done?”  These are the questions I most often get asked when I tell people “I brought my baby to work”.  To answer those questions: Project Management, 9 months, Babywearing.

When I was in college, the most distant thing from my mind was babies.  I never considered how pursuing a career would affect my eventual pursuit of a family.  I feel beyond lucky to have ended up with an employer that values family and a progressive manager that supports my efforts; both as his employee AND a mother.

So, how did I do it?  I came back to work at 4 weeks post-partum.  I started with half days and slowly transitioned to full days over 3 weeks.  I was provided a temporary private office, where we were able to breastfeed, dim the lights, and keep my phone ringer on low.

Hands-down, 100%, I would not have been able to complete the tasks required of my position without babywearing.  More than half of the time I had Riley strapped to my chest or my back in order to get work done.  It allowed for me to bond with my new baby and meet his needs,  while fulfilling the responsibilities to my employer.  Most customers that came in got a kick out of it! They surely thought it was amazingly considerate of my employer.

I am not saying that all women should be allowed to bring their babies to work.  It is silly to think that every job would be safe or reasonable to do so.  What I am saying is that women need to use their voice in the workplace.  It is a voice worth listening to, own it.  Do not be afraid to ask for a review in policy or propose a new policy.  Think outside the box!

Why did I do it?  I chose this path.  I did not ever realize how hard it would be; how hard it is to work toward something important to me, while longing to be with someone important me.  When I was given the opportunity to take this job, with the offer of bringing my baby to work during his developmental infant months, to say I jumped at it would be an understatement.   It was a situation that both parties had to look at as temporary; in the end I believe it benefitted both parties.

I am proud to say I am working mom.  I get much satisfaction out of the work that I do and am happy to help provide for my family.  Now that Riley attends daycare, I cherish even more the days we spent together when he was small.

Did I forget to mention the copious amounts of coffee and chocolate consumed?
