If you’ve stopped by a local bookstore lately, you may have noticed a hot new trend — coloring books. I’m not talking about the kind of coloring books you find next to the Crayola crayons in the school supply section of Target. These books are beautifully elaborate and range in themes from intricate scenes of flora and fauna to labyrinthine mandalas. You can even find zombie apocalypse and tattoo themed books. Or my personal favorite, a Harry Potter coloring book!
You may be wondering why the sudden popularity for a hobby that some may consider better suited for children. As an artist, I can attest that having a creative outlet is therapeutic for all ages. Here are 5 reasons why I think you should jump on the coloring book trend.
1. Like I mentioned before, it’s therapeutic. Coloring is a great way to unwind and de-stress. Turn on your favorite tunes, make a hot cup o’ joe (or wine if that’s your fancy), put on some comfy yoga pants and focus on numero uno (that’s you)!
2. It’s an inexpensive endeavor. Most books range in the $5-$15 price range. Not ready to make the investment? That’s okay, you can find oodles of free printables online. In fact, scroll to the bottom of this post and you will find two starter coloring pages, compliments of your friends at the Rochester MN Moms Blog! All you need are crayons, colored pencils or markers to create your masterpiece. Ask your kids, maybe they’ll share their supplies. If not, you can pick up a box for a few bucks at most stores.
3. It’s an easy peasy hobby. You don’t need any special skills or lessons to start coloring. Also, clean up is a breeze, and you can tote your book with you! Stash it in your purse for the times when you’re stuck in a waiting room somewhere or while you are sitting in the car, waiting to pick up your kiddos from school or an extracurricular activity.
4. Coloring can be solo or social. Some days you may want to sit and color alone and enjoy some me-time. Other days you may want to get a group of your gal pals together and have a coloring/gab sesh. Or better yet, have a coloring book date with your kids!
5. Everyone needs art in their lives. Enjoy art and create art. It’s good for your soul. Pablo Picasso once said, “Art washes away from the soul the dust of everyday life.”
