Meet the Writer: Kim

Each Wednesday we will be featuring a member of our writing team. We hope to further grow our community by sharing a bit more about the women that make up Rochester MN Moms Blog!

This week…meet Kim!

Kim is a Rochester native who in 2006 unexpectedly found herself back in her hometown, marrying a boy she had dated as a 15 year old, and putting down new roots.

1) What is your favorite TV guilty pleasure?

I could (and probably will) watch The Office, Parks & Rec, and Friends forever. I also recently finished watching all of the seasons of The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt and loved it.

2) How do you take your coffee?

Morning, noon, and night please and thank you. Wait…that probably wasn’t the answer you were looking for. I drink it black, with a couple of ice cubes in it to cool it down so I can drink it *rightnow*. Otherwise, I’ll set it down to wait for it to cool and then who knows when I’ll get back to it?

3) What’s your favorite way to start the day?

Coffee, breakfast, and silence. My real life allows two out of the three. I’ll let you guess which one never happens.

4) What is your favorite word?

I really love words. I couldn’t begin to narrow down the words that I love, but I can tell you that there are two words I really hate: moist and flesh. Even typing them makes my skin crawl a little because I hear them in my head. Ew. Just EW.

5) What is an irrational fear that you have?

I have a total fear of things falling into the toilet. The toilet lid must be down unless the toilet is in use. I used to think this was an irrational fear, but then I had kids. 3 boys, to be exact. As someone who has fished a number of random items out of the toilet in the last 8 years, I can say this fear is legit.

6) What is one thing you are working at being better at?

Being less of a control freak, and letting go of my idea of perfection. This is very hard for me, but I’m trying to be more mindful of it and release my grip on everything.

7) What is something you never feel bad splurging on?

Good running shoes and having a proper fitting for them, instead of randomly trying things off the shelf. I love running and having great shoes makes all the difference in the world.

8) What has been most surprising to you as a mother?

There have been a lot of surprises, so it’s hard to pick just one, but probably the profound amount of change that motherhood brings. Everything changed: from schedule, priorities, and how my time is spent, to friendships, relationships, goals, and aspirations, to perspectives and my definition of “tired.” There were so many changes physically, mentally, and emotionally. It’s indescribable. I knew things would change when I became a mom, but I had no clue what that would really mean. But it’s also the best thing that I have ever done.
