My Life’s Purpose (It’s Beyond Motherhood)

We hear it all the time, “find your purpose.” Since childhood, we’re asked what we want to be when we grow up. We then go through the motions to ultimately realize the destiny we are here to fulfill. Your calling: have you found it?

Is it becoming a teacher, doctor, or volunteer? Or a parent, musician, or cook? There is a range of ways to do work that helps others. However, I’ve seen many people, myself included, struggle to find the perfect career that will help them find purpose. The truth is, purpose is not found in a career or even a title. While many of us do have fulfilling, even honorable careers, purpose is found beyond that.

Motherhood is rewarding and it comes with challenges and frustration. It’s not necessarily my life’s purpose to be a mother; this is a privilege that I’m beyond blessed to have. I exist so that my children will learn from me and perpetuate the love given and lessons learned.

Do you want to know my life’s purpose? Knowing that my presence makes someone happy. Making someone happy can be as simple as:

  • Early morning hugs
  • Holding hands
  • Words of encouragement
  • A touch on the shoulder
  • Helping a neighbor
  • A loving glance
  • Writing a special note
  • Dancing in the kitchen
  • Offering your time
  • Kisses on the cheek
  • Singing the birthday song
  • Expressing gratitude
  • Playing games together
  • Opening a door
  • Cooking for someone
  • Late night snuggles
  • Prayers and well-wishes
  • Laughing at silly jokes
  • Laughing again at the same jokes
  • Smiling adoringly
  • Listening attentively
  • Cleaning for someone

These little things, and more- give me purpose. I’m fulfilled knowing that my children and others will benefit from my purpose and I’m thankful that moments in motherhood cause me to pause and really reflect on the needs of others. It’s a give and take of emotional and physical needs. I try my best to live my purpose through my children.

But, sometimes I don’t want to hug, kiss, or listen, neither do others. In the thick of motherhood, patience runs low and emotions run high.

I won’t always make everyone happy and you won’t either. There’s only so much of ourselves we can give. The solution? Give yourself grace; your purpose applies to you as well. Refilling your cup and doing things to make you feel happy helps you stay confident and energized.

The hugs you’ve given, cards you’ve written, meals you’ve made – those things are memorable to others. Purpose is not about having a title to fulfill, it’s about fulfilling those around you. There’s no need to wait for the perfect time, job, or resources…happiness is given and received every day!

Maybe you haven’t put much thought into purpose, or you may even think you don’t have one. Your purpose may not look like mine, but according to me, if your presence has made someone happy (which I’m sure it has), you’re fulfilling your purpose!
