Nursery Reveal! (and Some Tips from a First Timer)

After several months of planning, purchasing, arranging, and rearranging, I’m finally to the point where I can call the nursery done. Finished. Complete. And I’m actually sort of sad about it. Now what am I supposed to do for the next 8 weeks?

Two heads are (occasionally) better than one

Basilica Grey, Revere Pewter, Grey Goose, Suede Grey – you get the idea. It shouldn’t come as a surprise then that I chose a color called Dolphin Fin for the nursery. And then I added some grey and ivory curtains, a grey recliner, and even found a lovely grey rug.

Although usually pretty laissez-faire when it comes to matters related to home decor, Barry gently suggested that maybe the baby would appreciate a bit of visual stimulation. In other words, ditch the depressing monochromatic color scheme.

Ok. Fine.

In retrospect, I agree with his assessment… I’d even go so far as to say the added color was a necessary component. So yes, he was right.

Think beyond baby themes (and colors)

Etsy finds

Sure, baby stuff is cute. Tiny animals, pretty pastels, and matchy-matchy… everything. That said, I anticipate spending a fair amount of time in the room and wanted something that also appealed to my semi-grown-up senses. I scoured Etsy for non-babyish nursery decor and ended up with a mobile, three art prints, and a custom map with little red hearts over Rochester and Dublin (Barry’s hometown).

Something old, something new…

I’ll be the first to admit that buying nursery accoutrements is fun. And addicting. And expensive. So why not repurpose items already lying around the house? I pulled an antique yellow dresser from one of our guest bedrooms because honestly, the last time we had guests was for our wedding over two years ago. Nursery Reveal | Rochester MN Moms Blog

Other sacrifices to the nursery cause included a little copper plant stand that happened to be the perfect height for a side table, another random dresser that fit nicely into the closet for extra storage, and my favorite childhood stuffed bear aptly named Fuzzy Wuzzy.

DIY

I’m not exactly HGTV star quality when it comes to DIY projects, but I do enjoy tinkering around here and there. First task: I wanted some relatively low-profile bookshelves and wasn’t finding what I needed online. I turned to Pinterest for inspiration (Pinspiration?) and ended up fashioning some shelves out of super cheap IKEA spice racks. Total investment was about $16 and two hours of my time to stain and hang.

A small triangle quilt was another labor of love that required just one weekend hunched over my sewing machine. The end result wasn’t exactly what I had originally pictured in my mind but it definitely has character 🙂

Now we just need to add a baby and we’re all set!
