Simple DIY Terrariums for All Ages

Simple DIY Terrariums for All Ages | Rochester MN Moms BlogOn a recent trip to the craft store, my daughter and I stumbled upon a section completely devoted to all things terrariums. We spent a good 15 minutes oohing and ahhing over the tiny mushroom houses and other miniature assortments. A package of tree frogs the size of thumb tacks caught the eye of my 8-year-old and it was love at first sight. So naturally, we scooped up said frogs, a tiny pond for them to chillax in, a fairy figurine and a bite sized mushroom abode. After collecting a few more supplies we were ready to make our own terrarium aka miniature garden. Follow along with this tutorial to learn how to make your very own terrarium!

Supplies:

  • soil
  • small pebbles
  • activated carbon/activated charcoal (found in the fish supplies section of the pet store)
  • moss
  • shells, sea glass, rocks, twigs, etc.
  • succulents or other small plants
  • miniature figurines
  • glass jars, bowls, containers, etc. (with or without lids)

Step 1:

Carefully scoop pebbles into the bottom of your glass container until the bottom is covered.

Step 2:

Scoop 1 – 2 teaspoons (more if you are using a larger container) of the activated charcoal on top of the pebble layer.

Step 3:

Scoop your soil into the container.

Step 4:

Carefully add your plants and any accessories to your terrarium. Get creative and add sea shells, sea glass, pebbles, rocks, sand or moss to the top of the soil. Add your figurines and create a fun fairy garden scene or add animals and create a jungle. The possibilities are endless!

As you can see, creating a terrarium is simple and fun. We enjoyed it so much that we actually made several in one sitting. This activity is perfect for all ages and it’s a great way to introduce your children to caring for plants and exploring their creativity.

Let us know in the comments section if you try this fun project.   Happy DIY-ing friends!
