So, They Are All Named After Flowers?

Naming a baby is a big deal. It feels like a monumental task. This is the name your kid will live with for the rest of their life. Names kind of have a way of defining your child’s personality. Then, when you have multiple kids their names have to kind of “go” together. Some parents choose to name all their kids starting with the same letter. Other families choose to go with all family names. I know many families whose kids are all named after a certain country/culture, like Norwegian or Swedish (we live in Minnesota, so that’s not too surprising). Before I had kids I always thought having a family theme for names was a little tacky, until I had my own.

Taylor, my husband, and I never consciously decided we would have a theme for our girls’ names when we first found out we were pregnant. Actually, our first daughter’s name doesn’t even fit with our “theme”. But somehow we ended up with three girls whose names all are related to flowers. Our first daughters name is Lilly and she is named after my husband’s grandma’s maiden name. When we were searching for our second daughter’s name we started looking into flower names to compliment our first daughter’s name. Dahlia seemed like the perfect fit and we suddenly had a name theme. So, everywhere we went people started saying the same things when they found out we were pregnant with our third girl. Here is what they said:

  1. You should have a garden full of flowers representing each girl’s name.
  2. That’s so cute! (This is probably the most common thing people say)
  3. If you have a fourth you should name them…. Rose, Violet, Iris, Daisy, Calla, Amaryllis, etc, etc.
  4. What would you do if you had a boy? (And to answer that question, we would have shifted to a “nature” theme and named him Bear. 🙂 To my mothers delight, we didn’t have a boy and we didn’t get to use our super cool nature boy name.)
  5. Oh my gosh! They are all named after flowers. Was that intentional?
  6. I know a family who also had a flower theme and these are their names (Insert 3-4 flower names).

So, along came our third girl on Christmas Day (she made quite the entrance when she was born, I promise to blog about that sometime). The expectation was that her name would be a flower, to fit in with the family theme. We painstakingly looked through all the different flower names to see which one was the best fit with her big sisters names, Lilly and Dahlia. We settled on Poppy, because we thought it had the best little sister vibe.

Now that I have a name theme for my children I have decided I love it. The girls love reading about, looking at photos and even getting to see their flowers in person. They have each developed a love for gardening mostly because their names are flowers. My parents have even made plans to have a garden full of lilies, dahlias and poppies. My father-in-law, an agriculture and horticulture teacher, loves the theme, as well, and enjoys planting beautiful lilies, dahlias and poppies in the greenhouse. Having a name theme is fun and I recommend that if you find the right theme, go for it. People will have their opinions and definitely throw in their two cents, but it’s worth it if you love their names. Do you also have a flower name theme for your kids? If so, what are your kids names? If you don’t have a flower name theme, do you have a different name theme?
