Dear Boy, Across the Ocean

A few weeks ago, our family was matched with a 2-year-old boy, across the ocean.  My heart longs to say these words to our sweet son.

Dear Boy, Across The Ocean | Rochester MN Moms Blog

Dear sweet boy,

You are precious  You are loved.  No one in this whole world is made in the exact same way as you.  You are one of a kind.  I get the unique privilege of being your second mother.  I get to be the mother that will spend your formative years teaching you about life, love, what makes up a family.  I also have the heartbreaking task before me of taking you away from your first language, your familiar surroundings, everything that you know.  I have the awesome responsibility of raising you to know and appreciate the culture and heritage of your birth family and country.

Sweet son, you need to know that our journey to you was twisted and turned and one big, messed-up adventure.  But we enjoyed it.  We enjoyed pursuing you.  We were fine waiting, because we knew there was a you.  At the same time, you are not even aware that there is an “us” yet.  We pray daily that we will be able to help you heal from your grief and that you will soon be able to trust us.

We look forward to bringing you into our crazy world-adventuring tribe.  You have two older brothers who long to wrestle and play and “sound their barbaric yawps” with you.  You have a younger sister who will adore you wholeheartedly.  You will be another hero for her to admire (and occasionally provoke.)

Dear boy, I can’t say these words to you right now.  Maybe not for six months or so more.  But believe me, sweet son, I will whisper them in your ears and speak them straight into your heart when I can finally hold you in my arms.

Lovingly, from across the ocean,

Mama
