Hanging Out at The (Brow) Bar: An Ulta Experience

My two daughters (age 13 and 16) joined me to check out the new mecca of makeup products that popped up in Southwest Rochester recently. We had a great time perusing the many product and service offerings tucked inside this store.

Products

Ulta divides their products into two lines, which they call custom prestige(think MAC cosmetics, BareMinerals, Clinique) and mass cosmetics(aka drugstore brands).

What I loved:They have a great selection of Kiehls products available – a brand that is usually fairly limited in selection at other places in town. They also had great hair care products. I was able to stock up on my favorite shampoo, which was on sale. Bonus!

What my girls loved:Since Ulta houses both ends of the product spectrum they thought they would be more likely to shop here with friends. They mentioned that no matter how much money someone had to spend, they could find something to buy within their budget and everyone could shop together instead of going to various stores.

What you should know: Sales vary between the store and online. Some are exclusive to either location. My online offer (sent to me via email) included several free samples with a $75 purchase and that was not available in the store itself.

Services

Ulta houses a full salon, a skin bar offering facials, lashes and makeup application and a brow bar.

What I loved: While we did not try the salon services, we did have very positive experiences getting a short makeup application lesson and foundation matching by a representative from Bare Minerals.

What my girls loved: They were very happy about the brow bar which offers shaping and waxing services. My 13-year-old had her eyebrows waxed for the very first time and she reported no pain at all. Ulta has a proprietary wax that is supposed to be less painful than traditional waxing.

What you should know: Ulta requires a permission slip to be signed for brow bar services if a child is under 18. Brow bar services are first come, first serve or by appointment.

Overall

I was very impressed with the number of friendly and knowledgeable employees throughout the store. We were greeted right when we walked in the door and offered help occasionally but were also left to shop and test products together. The store is clean, well-lit and has a very comprehensive offering of beauty products at competitive prices.
