New Photos + Scavenger Hunt | Heart of the City for Rochester Families

This post is sponsored by Destination Medical CenterWe are halfway through our series to showcase the construction and give you a behind-the-scenes look of the Heart of the City construction in downtown Rochester.  This initiative is a part of the Destination Medical Center Heart of the City project.  It will encompass the Peace Plaza, 1st Avenue SW, and the Alley (a renovated space linking the Peace Plaza to Center Street and 2nd Street SW). If you’ve missed any of the the previous posts, you can access them from the main navigation bar on Rochester Mom.

Have you been downtown to fill out the scavenger hunt yet? We have recently updated this scavenger hunt to include new things to find! Pick up your scavenger hunt at the construction station outside the Heart of the City construction office (on 1st Avenue SW just down from Tangerine Gifts) or print it out below.

Century Projects

The Heart of the City is a “Century Project.” The majority of the work up until this point has been to improve the infrastructure downtown. The work below ground will help Rochester grow for the next 100 years. Without it, the city we love would not be able to grow. The infrastructure improvements replaced an aging system and will ensure that water will still flow, sewers will still work, and electricity will continue to be delivered without interruption for the next century!

Updated Heart of the City Construction Photos

We visited downtown this past week for a super special top secret* project that we can’t wait to share with you soon. When we were there, we took some photos to show you all that’s being done! We were also able to drive through on the newly re-opened 2nd Street SW/SE corridor from 1st Ave SW to Civic Center Drive in front of the Rochester Public Library.  The Heart of the City construction team worked hard to open this main road ahead of schedule.

Peace Plaza

Great progress is being made on the Peace Plaza scrim pool. Return piping and forming footings are being worked on this week (as well as last week).

Treebox Installation

More progress is being made on the Treebox installation on 1st Avenue SW. These are similar to milk crates and provide structural capacity for soil and trees. The treeboxes will allow the roots to grow through and also provide support for the sidewalk and curb.
