5 Winter Reads for your Tween

Here’s to embracing winter. ‘Tis the season to settle down with a good book, a cozy blanket, and a hot drink. If possible a roaring fire is recommended! Currently, in my house, my 9 and a 12-year-old  are ferocious readers. The following are books they have read or plan to read this winter. These 5 winter reads should ramp up your children’s imaginations, get them excited about the cold and the snow, and help them appreciate central heating.

The Long Winter by Laura Ingalls Wilder: Product Details

A survival story at heart, the Ingalls family moves to De Smet, South Dakota only to face a winter that seems like it will never end. Blizzard after blizzard hits the little town, and as the Ingalls family’s food and winter heat diminish their survival skills are put to the test. This book highlights the importance of family and community. It always leaves me appreciating the fact that I do not have to twist straw into bundles to stay alive.

The Essential Calvin and Hobbes by Bill Watson: Product Details

If you haven’t introduced your child to Calvin and Hobbes you really should. Belly laughs and inspiration for building the craziest snowpeople ever are in their future. Calvin’s love of snow is infectious and may spur your kids onto more outdoor adventures. Actually, I recommend all of Bill Watson’s Calvin and Hobbes books, but this one has just the right amount of winter comics.

My Side of the Mountain by Jean Craighead George: Product Details

Sam Gribley spends the winter in the Catskill Mountains surviving off the land and his own whits. Though I don’t endorse the fact that he ran away from his family, the endurance and ingenuity he demonstrates will impress any kid. It is a story of a boy who overcomes the elements and discovers the many gifts and hardships that nature has to offer.

The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe by C.S. Lewis: Product Details

Yes, it is a major motion picture, but if your children haven’t actually read the book, they are missing so much! In this book, the four Pevensie children, Peter, Susan, Edmund, and Lucy enter an enchanted world of snow and ice through a magic wardrobe. Narnia is a world ruled by a Snow Queen that causes it to always be winter and never Christmas. Along the way, they meet talking beasts, a majestic Lion, and enter into a classic battle of good versus evil.

A Kid’s Guide to the 2018 Winter Games by Jack L. Roberts :

In our house, we are huge Olympic fans. We are counting down the days to the start of the 2018 Winter Olympics in PyeongChang, Korea. This book focuses on fifteen different sports and highlights some of the top athletes from Team USA. It also contains history trivia and fun facts from past Winter Olympics.

What are some of your favorite winter reads for your tweens? I’d love to hear them.
