My family has a camper.  I thought this camper would be a really good idea.  I had dreams of blissful mornings and evenings around the campfire.  Dreams of idyllic moments in nature perfect for my Instagram feed.  In hindsight, I was wrong.

This camper is a huge pain.  And SO MUCH WORK FOR THE MOM.  Fortunately my in-laws have a cabin on Lake Pepin and we just park our enormous pain in the butt camper basically in their driveway and they don’t seem to care.

So most weekends we load up and head over to Wisconsin.  This entails me doing about 3 loads of laundry so we have clean clothes and swimsuits, putting half our fridge in a cooler and any other random stuff we might need, and making sure we have all the necessary items for a weekend away.

Don’t Forget The Bug Soother!!!

One necessity I always keep on my list is Bug Soother.  I am not a fan of normal bug spray.  That stuff in a can smells bad and makes my skin feel gross, and my kids hate when I make them wear a layer of that nasty stuff.

Bug Soother | Rochester MN Moms BlogLast summer we discovered Bug Soother.  It is quite literally a breath of fresh air.  My oldest son has severe eczema and his skin is extremely sensitive; Bug Soother does not bother him at all.  It smells great and doesn’t feel sticky or icky on your skin.  Bug Soother is made with all natural ingredients and is DEET free, so you don’t have to worry about what you’re putting on your skin and on your kiddos.  It’s made with lemongrass oil, so it smells like one of those lovely soaps in a fancy store.

Next to the lake and near swampland, the mosquitoes, flies and gnats can be pretty bad.  We used to come home with all sorts of red bumps.  Bug Soother is excellent at preventing the bugs from biting and keeping them at bay.  As soon as we are done swimming, I usually put on jammies and Bug Soother, and everyone is a happy camper.

S’mores, campfires and Wisconsin fireworks keep everyone in good spirits.

Typically the happiness wears out about two hours past bedtime, when no one will actually sleep in that dumb camper.  But yet we get up and do it again and again.  Maybe next year we will figure out the trick to getting a good night’s rest.
